Pierian Spring Academy - Adult Education in Sarasota, Florida

About Pierian Spring Academy

Who are we?

Pierian Spring Academy (PSA) is a high-quality, low-cost, college level continuing education program for persons of all ages but especially retirees and semi-retirees, regardless of educational background. We have only one requirement: a willingness to learn and to enjoy the intellectual refreshment of unique, stimulating content and discussions.

What are the classes like?

In the friendly, interactive atmosphere of small classes, participants discuss the subject matter under the leadership of highly qualified experts. There are no tests and grades. You get as much out of the college-level, non-credit courses as you desire. We use student discussion, guided by a skilled leader to enrich and enlighten. Course suggested readings provide an opportunity to study content in greater depth.

Why Pierian Spring Academy?

PSA believes that to remain mentally youthful, “staying alive intellectually” is the prescription of choice for all adults. Learning the PSA way is a stimulating and friendly experience to share with your classmates. PSA seminars are designed to be far more energizing than if you passively sat through a lecture. Our faculty will encourage each of you, according to your personal level, to get the most out of the course. We are also proud that so many persons have expanded their social circle as a result of becoming members of the PSA student body.

Where are we?

PSA courses are held at four locations: One is located in east Sarasota at Argosy University, 5250 17th Street at N. Honore Avenue, a second one at Plymouth Harbor, 700 John Ringling Boulevard on the road to St. Armands Circle. The third location is in downtown Sarasota at the Senior Friendship Center, 1900 Brother Geenan Way (intersection of 41 & 301). Our newest location, also in east Sarasota, is at Eckerd College, 8031 Cooper Creek Boulevard. All of these locations provide suitable classrooms, pleasant surroundings, ample free parking, and are barrier free.

When do we meet?

The 2011 Fall Session begins October 24 and ends December 8. The 2012 Winter Session begins Monday, January 9 and the Spring Session begins February 20.  The fall courses meet for 4 or 6 weeks and winter and spring courses vary in length of 4, 6, and 8 weeks. Classes meet for two hours, once a week between the hours of 9:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m.

How much do the classes cost?

Tuition rates vary with the length of the course and breakdown as follows: 4 weeks ($55), 6 weeks ($75), and 8 weeks ($100). PSA is a nonprofit, volunteer managed organization committed to keeping costs at a minimum and at the same time remunerating our faculty at a modest level. Scholarship aid is available.

What is the class size?

PSA favors small classes some with as few as three students and tries not to exceed 25. Our typical class size is 10 to 12 participants and is ideal for dialog between faculty and students. All classes are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. Early registration is encouraged.
