Directions

Directions to G.WIZ: G.WIZ is located at 1001 Blvd. of the Arts in downtown Sarasota directly south of the Van Wezel Performing Arts Hall and across the street from the Hyatt.

Directions to Argosy University: Argosy University is located in a small plaza at 5250 17th Street on the southwest corner of N. Honore Ave. and 17th Street.

Directions between Campuses: The most direct and pleasant route between G.WIZ and Argosy U. is traveling on 6th Street, left on Orange, right on 17th Street. The distance between venues is 6 miles and travel time is less than 15 minutes. Both locations provide ample, convenient, safe and free parking.

WHO ARE WE?
Pierian Spring Academy (PSA) is a high-quality, low-cost, college level academic continuing education program for persons of all ages but especially retirees and semi-retirees, regardless of educational background. We have only one requirement: a willingness to learn and to enjoy the intellectual refreshment of unique, stimulating content and discussions. Winter residents are welcome.

WHEN DO WE MEET?
Fall Lecture Series Begins October 2 and ends December 18, 2:00 - 3:30 p.m. at Selby Library

Fall Session 2007
Begins October 2 and ends October 25

Tuition is $50 per course

Winter Session 2008
Begins January 7 and ends March 28
Tuition rates vary according to length of class:

HOW MUCH?
6 weeks is $65 per course, 8 weeks is $90, 10 weeks is $110 and 12 weeks is $130.
There are no registration fees or annual dues.

PSA BOARD LEADERSHIP BIOS

Lisa A. Abbott is a graduate of Converse College in Spartanburg, SC. She is a Florida native and her husband, Larry is a Sarasota native. She is currently the Membership Manager of Mote Marine Laboratory and has been fortunate to work with such fabulous local nonprofits as Asolo Rep, Marie Selby Botanical Gardens, the Sarasota Film Festival, and the Sarasota Film Society. She is pleased to join the staff of PSA.

Larry G. Brown received his B.A. and J.D. degrees from the University of Minnesota. He is a retired senior officer (chairman of the board, president, or senior vice president) and general counsel and secretary of a number of large companies, both public and private, mostly in financial service businesses. Mr. Brown is also a former member of the boards of directors or trustees of a number of business corporations and numerous civic, cultural, and charitable organizations. He has served as Pierian Spring Academy treasurer, executive committee member, and registrar since 2002.

Robert V. (Bob) Carlson, the director of the Pierian Spring academy, is an emeritus professor at the University of Vermont as well as president of ABC Associates, Inc., an educational consulting firm. He has had wide experience as a teacher and educational administrator over the last 25 years. He was a full professor at the University of Vermont, a visiting professor at the University of Oulu in Finland, a laboratory school administrator at the University of Iowa and has also had experience as a public school administrator and an elementary classroom teacher. Dr. Carlson is an author of three books in the educational field as well as many articles and research papers. He holds a Bachelor of Science degree from the State University of New York at Buffalo, a master’s degree from S.U.N.Y. at Brockport, and a doctoral degree in education from the University of Rochester. He makes his home in Englewood, Florida.

Alan Cudworth graduated from the University of Alabama with a B.S. in electrical engineering and continued his education at M.I.T. while working in the acoustics laboratory. He received his S.M. degree from M.I.T. and joined the Lincoln Laboratory staff to aid in the design and establishment of the Distant Early Warning Radar System across the Artic borders. He then joined the staff of the Liberty Mutual Safety Research Center. Mr. Cudworth retired from Liberty Mutual in 1991 as vice president and director of research. During his association with Liberty Mutual, he served on 18 boards of directors of professional organizations in the safety and health field, and taught on a part-time basis at Harvard University.

Mary Jane De Genaro received her B.A. from Sarah Lawrence College and her M.A. from Teacher's College, Columbia University. She has served as a consultant for National Piano Foundation, International Piano Foundation, Henson Associates, and the MIT Seymour Papert Hennigan School Project. Ms. De Genaro is the founder of the Greenwich Arts Council, Greenwich, Connecticut. She also designed and developed MusicShapes, children' s software for Apple Computer. In addition, she has written a novel (Call It Paradise, published by Kensington Press, 1995), and composed the original musical, Rajah, which was produced by Royal Palm Players, Boca Grande, Florida, in 1997.

Carole Gallotta taught high school history in Chicago for 34 years. During that time she served on many school committees and was chairman of the history department for 20 years and chairman of the social activities committee for 20 years.

Jerry Hamovit is a retired attorney who practiced in Washington, D. C., primarily in tax, real estate and corporate matters. He is married to Joelle Hamovit, a retired psychiatric social worker. Since retirement, he has mediated for the Sarasota 12th Judicial Circuit, served on the Longboat Key Planning and Zoning Board, and been president or vice-president of his Longboat Key condominium. He is a graduate of Rice University and Harvard Law School.

Edward Hoerr is presently serving as president of the board of directors of the Pierian Spring Academy. He served one year as interim president of Beloit College in his former life. The rest of Mr. Hoerr' s career was in business in Illinois where he spent much time as a volunteer board member on many cultural and educational organizations, 10 years on a public school board and many years on boards of a college and two theological seminaries.

Daniel R. Idzik is former senior vice president and general counsel of Booz Allen Hamilton, a global strategy and technology consulting firm. His extensive experience in not- for-profit organizations includes board memberships and presidencies of the Longboat Key Center for the Arts, the Neuberger Museum of Art, Philharmonia Virtuosi, Council for the Arts in Westchester, and the Rye Art Center. He is currently a member of the Board of the Jacob's Pillow Dance Festival and the Pierian Spring Academy. He is also a member of the Harvard Club of Sarasota and the Harvard Club of New York City.

Joel Larus is emeritus professor of international relations, New York University. He is the founder and first executive director of the Pierian Spring Academy.

Molly Sinclair McCartney is a retired newspaper reporter and public relations executive. Her newspaper background includes 10 years as a reporter for the Miami Herald and 14 years at the Washington Post. She is a graduate of Georgetown University and a Nieman Fellow, Class of 1978, at Harvard University. Her professional experience includes five years at the American Petroleum Institute, where she was manager of public relations. She is a founding member of Forum Truth, a Sarasota not-for-profit group that sponsors speakers on important national and international issues. She is president of her condominium association in Holmes Beach.
