This Year's Courses
"Fascinating history brought to life by the instructor"
"Enthusiastic teacher – she is a star!"
"This course is a gem, I hated for it to end!"
This is Pierian Spring Academy's last catalog!
On June 1st, 2017, Pierian Spring Academy will merge with Ringling College of Art & Design's newly formed
Ringling College Lifelong Learning Academy (RCLLA). Until that time PSA will remain the same vibrant
lifelong learning academy offering the diverse roster of courses you have come to expect from us through
the fall, winter and spring of 2016-2017.
This year, PSA is offering 70 exciting academic courses in subjects such as ballet and music, government,
history, film, science and technology, nature, literature, media, ideas and spirituality. Our dean, Stan Nikkel,
has worked closely with Phil Buck, a longtime PSA literature instructor, to develop 52 new courses and
identify gifted faculty to teach them. In this year's catalog, you'll see that many of your favorite instructors are
returning to teach. However, it is with sadness that I note the passing of dear friends Owen Comora,
Beth Ann Salzman and Joey Silverstein during the past year. They will be missed.
Many thanks to Stan and Phil, as well as faculty members Len Blanchard and James Johnson, plus board
members Dan Idzik, Mary Lou Morton and Colleen Tierney, who put together this year's wonderful schedule.
We are pleased to have added a new venue this year, Everglades University at their Sarasota campus just off
I-75 and University Parkway. The map and directions are in the catalog as well as on the PSA website.
Thanks to board members Tom Dietrich, Charlie Stryker, John Gartner and others who worked diligently to
find appropriate and convenient venues for PSA.
I wish to extend a warm welcome to our new board members: Phil Buck, Dick Dyer, Stan Nikkel and Colleen
Tierney. Each brings unique skills to our organization. We all appreciate their willingness to contribute their
time and talents. Thanks to all of our board members for their diligent, hands-on work to keep PSA running.
Thanks also to our tireless volunteer Brian Eckl for his beautifully written and witty newsletters. A special
thank you to Dan Idzik, our outgoing president, for his wise, sensitive, generous and strong leadership
during the 2015-2016 term. Last but not least, a special thank you with deep gratitude to Debbie Cowles,
our administrative director, for her limitless energy and efforts that have made PSA possible.
We are excited by our next chapter - the 2017-18 academic year - when we will consolidate with the
alliance of lifelong learning programs under the RCLLA umbrella. It will be a strong and vibrant partnership
that offers the quality classes you deserve, most of them in the beautifully renovated Sarasota High School
building on S. Tamiami Trail. In addition to the new Sarasota Museum of Art, this new facility will feature
classrooms and lecture halls with state-of-the art equipment, places for students and faculty to socialize,
and convenient parking on Ringling College's expanding South Campus.
In the meantime - we are looking forward to another exciting academic year. On behalf of the board of
directors, thank you for your generous contributions, help and support for adult education over the past
amazing 18 years.
With warm regards,
President, Board of Directors
